All Too Human – Tate Britain

Last week I ventured to the Tate to see their new exhibition, ‘All Too Human’, looking forwards to seeing uncomfortably realistic Freud and soul-sucking, nihilistic Bacon. I also discovered a new artist, who has certainly struck a chord with me… I even bought a postcard. Christ, his work must be good.

The work of Michael Andrews (1928-1995) certainly held my gaze the longest, captured both by the subject matter and his beautiful, ethereal painting style. In ‘Melanie and Me Swimming’ (1978-9) the acrylic paint saturates the canvas; the dark, cool water had seeped into the painting, pooling around the figures. It’s a snapshot of human interaction, a fleeting event that may not seem significant.

With ‘The Deer Park’, Andrews uses luminous washes of colour, muted shades of violet and green. An exclusive club inhabited for eternity by ghostly figures, whispered rumours, illicit dalliances and too much champagne. There is something very Twin Peaks about this… Andrews used photographs of celebrities for inspiration – can you spot Marilyn Monroe?

The Grand Etsy Opening and The Lichtenstein Retrospective

Good afternoon!

Well I have spent far too long house-hunting today with non-existent money…. buy oh, it’s nice to daydream! One day.

Drum roll, please………. I have opened an Etsy shop! Sadly, my work is no longer for sale with New Blood Art, but it’s exciting to know that now I am entirely in charge of the sale of my work, for the time being. And, of course, it means that it is more affordable, without a gallery taking a huge commission.

Took a trip to the Tate Modern last weekend to go see the Lichtenstein retrospective. Never been too fussed by him, I think partly because in school EVERYONE was copying his work, and I… wanted to be different, being the quirky person I thought I was. But I do appreciate how important he was. And his work does not look interesting reproduced in an A4 book. It needs to be massive, you NEED to see it in person!

It was a really enjoyable exhibition. Felt quite happy, and sort of peaceful floating around, appreciating his paintings for what they were. We didn’t feel the need to read all about him, and indeed there weren’t loads of words everywhere. It was a lovely light-hearted show, and it’s incredible to be able to see the paintings so up-close and from a distance. Some of the colours were amazingly vivid, and, I guess like most art, reproductions just do not do his work justice! In the gift shop, there were a few images I would have liked to buy, but NOT postcard size- I want massive prints that don’t even fit in my flat. Ha. Er yes.

Off to Camden tomorrow to catch up with my little sister, which I’m looking forwards to muchly. Whilst there, gonna go visit Camden Arts Centre who have an exhibition on at the moment of the work of Dorothy Iannone, which looks right up my street……..

Now must go do the bloody washing up. I want to stomp my feet like a teenager and protest angrily… but there’s no-one here to complain to…. Must do less cooking and eat out more. It’s the only solution.

 

Nucleus Arts Gallery Chatham – RED Exhibition

For the first time, in a very long while, I have work in an exhibition. It’s at Nucleus Arts in Chatham and is in aid of Comic Relief- a percentage of everything sold will be donated to charity. So if for some reason you just happen to be in Kent, do go have a look!

 

 

Sketchbook Honesty

I have sent off my submission for the John Gingell Award to the nice people at g39……meep. £5000 for 6 months and help and an exhibition at the end of it. Yes please! Fingers, toes and everything else crossable are crossed. If I got it, I’d probably be able to take a couple of months off work, to be a solidly art making artist. Oh to have so much time! We will see.

So I’ll be in an exhibition in The SHO Gallery in July. This is the one that I bought a wall for, and came up with big exciting dark crochety delicate felty vulnerable plans for. They haven’t worked out how I’d have hoped. I’m getting somewhere, but I think I was too ambitious. This plan may be a few years in the making. So much experimentation to still be done. It’ll come together one day.

BUT I have another plan. Honesty and secrets. How honest can anyone ever truly be? We only share with people the things we want them to see. We’re all different when we are alone. We all have thoughts that remain in our heads and never leave. We all have thoughts that we are too scared to even write down in a private diary that we know no one else will ever see. Because then we have to admit these things to ourselves. We do, don’t we? I am sure this is universal, but no one would talk about it. Uncomfortable.

I don’t keep a diary, but I do have sketchbooks. (Which are mainly full of words, cos, y’know, I like words. And ladies. Because that is all I draw. I think they are pieces of me?) Anyway, I had the idea to rip my current sketchbook apart, and nail the pages to a wall. That will be honesty. That will be me. Because at the time of filling the pages up, I knew that there would never be an audience. And so there is no censorship, I am being myself. I bloody hope. Nothing will be contrived, or fake, because it is real and I like that idea a hell of a lot. Although this may ruin sketchbooks for me forever, I can’t just keep surprising myself with HEY, PUT THIS ON A WALL, SHOW PEOPLE! Ha ha, na, it’ll be fine. Although it is a terrifying idea, and I think I shall need to warn some people before hand of the content… my sketchbooks contain my head. Not pretty sketches of landscapes and birds. They’re introverted, and scare me some of the time.

Anyway, it is an exciting idea, and I hope I have the guts to pull it off. I THINK it is a good idea. Argh.

Although it is very likely I will change my mind. Again.

Washington Gallery Friends Exhibition and Private View

So after having work in middle-of-nowhere north Wales and central London, it is about flipping time the lovely people of lovely Penarth got to have a gander- I did grow up there, after all. So quite excited about this exhibition, mmhmm yup. So everyone is invited to the private view- do come along, it’ll be grand 🙂
